Frequently Asked Questions
I am diabetic and have high blood pressure. Can I be on one of your programs?
Yes. We often work with Type II diabetics and patients who are hypertensive. In one study of over 20,000 people, the Optifast program averaged a 29 percent decrease in blood glucose and a 10 percent decrease in blood pressure. Type I diabetics are very rarely candidates for one of our programs due to the complexity of their health care. We recommend Type I diabetics consult with their primary care provider before giving us a call.
How is OPTIFAST® different from other weight loss products?
OPTIFAST® products are full meal replacement foods that must be directly managed by a physician because they drastically reduce the intake of calories and may cause dramatic weight loss.
I only need to lose 20 lbs. Can I still be on one of your programs?
You must have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 27 or higher to be an appropriate candidate for one of our programs. To calculate your BMI, go to the Resources page of our
website where you can find a BMI chart. Please call our office for more detatils.
How fast will I lose my excess weight?
Rate of weight loss is dependent upon your metabolic rate, caloric intake and energy output. How fast you will lose weight can be impacted by which weight loss program you
are on (i.e. OPTIFAST® vs. Calorie Counting). Your close adherence to the individualized program you develop with the provider is a key factor.
Do you have a maintenance program?
All our programs are focused on long term weight loss management. Close monitoring and ongoing guidance and support prepare each patient for a lifetime of weight maintenance.
What is a Physician Assistant and how are they different than a doctor?
Physician Assistants (PAs) are healthcare professionals licensed to practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician. A physician assistant is concerned with preventing, maintaining, and treating human illness and injury by providing a broad range of health care services that are traditionally performed by a physician. PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions. PAs exercise autonomy in medical decision making as determined by their supervising physician. At IHWW our PAs are highly trained professionals in the area of bariatric medicine working under the supervision of Dr. James Whynot.
